Taking Attendance & Recording Scores

How teachers record attendance for a class session and enter pre- and post-test assessment scores in NNP Attendance.

Teacher permissions

Teachers can:

  • View their assigned classes.
  • Take attendance for those classes.
  • Edit attendance through the end of the semester.
  • Act as a substitute for another teacher's class.
  • Enter assessment results (pre-test / post-test scores).

Teachers cannot create accounts, reset passwords, view audit logs, or access the full student directory outside their classes.

Typical workflow

  1. Sign in. Teachers sign in with email and password. New accounts must be created by an Administrator; public signup is disabled.
  2. Dashboard. After signing in they land on dashboard. It shows classes that need attendance today, today's scheduled classes, upcoming classes for the next two weeks, and attendance status per class: not started, in progress, or submitted.
  3. Take attendance. From the dashboard they tap a class card, or go to attendance. They see their roster for that class/date, then mark each student present or absent. Bulk actions let them mark all present/absent quickly. They save the attendance; a warning blocks navigation if they have unsaved changes.
  4. Substitute teaching. If a teacher is covering another teacher's class, that class appears in their dashboard and attendance list so they can take attendance for it.
  5. Enter assessments. Teachers go to assessments to record pre-test and post-test scores for students in their classes. Administrators can also edit assessment results.
  6. View students. The students page is scoped to only students enrolled in the teacher's classes, so they can see contact info and enrollment details without accessing the full directory.

Taking Attendance

Start from the Dashboard

When a teacher signs in, they land on the Dashboard. It shows:

  • Today's classes โ€” any classes assigned to them.
  • Requires attendance โ€” classes for today (or past dates) that haven't been fully submitted.
  • Upcoming classes โ€” the next two weeks of sessions.

Each class card shows:

  • Class name, date, time, and location.
  • Roster size.
  • Attendance status: Not started, In progress, or Submitted.

Open a class session

Click a class card. The app opens the Attendance page for that class on that date.

Mark each student

The page loads the roster as a mobile-friendly list. For each student, tap a status button:

  • Present
  • Absent

Teachers can also use bulk actions at the top to mark everyone Present or Absent, then adjust individual students.

Save

A Save attendance bar appears fixed at the bottom of the screen. Tap it to submit. If you try to leave with unsaved changes, the app warns you.

Status updates

  • Once every student has a status, the card shows Submitted.
  • If some are missing, it shows In progress.
  • Teachers and admins can edit attendance until the semester ends.

Adding Pre- and Post-Test Scores

Go to Assessments

From the navigation, open Assessments.

Select a class

Choose a class from the dropdown. The app loads every actively enrolled student.

Enter scores

Each student row has two number inputs:

  • Pre-test
  • Post-test

Type a numeric score for either or both. The app calculates and displays the improvement percentage below each name:

  • Example: +25.0%
  • If the pre-test is 0, it shows "Not calculable".
  • If only one score exists, it shows "Not yet available".

Save scores

Tap the Save scores button at the bottom. The app upserts the scores and shows a confirmation toast.

View outcomes

Assessment results also appear on the student profile page and in the Assessment Outcomes report under Reports.

Role notes

  • Teachers and Volunteer Teachers can record attendance and assessment scores for classes assigned to them.
  • Read-only users can view but cannot edit.
  • Administrators can edit everything and view all classes, not just their own.
